The Diver and the Fisherman

The Diver and the Fisherman

Runa's Oracle ♥

“We do not believe in ourselves until someone reveals that deep inside us something is valuable, worth listening to, worthy of our trust, sacred to our touch. Once we believe in ourselves we can risk curiosity, wonder, spontaneous delight or any experience that reveals the human spirit.”
E.E. Cummings

I use the following dual meditation (Descent and Ascent) before/after my live Old Soul Oracle imagery sessions with clients, but you can also use it to relax for your personal journaling session. As you become practiced at relaxing, you may find it easier to do the images without the relaxation meditation, but it can never hurt.

The Diver and the Fisherman Meditation

The Descent – Preceding your Imagery Work.

Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. In…. and out…. In…. and out…. See in your mind’s eye, or imagine, a beautiful young maiden dancing through a field of flowers. Breathe in the fragrance of the flowers, perhaps of your favorite flower. This maiden is actually a Diver. She was born with a natural talent for diving deep and exploring the depths of wells, often known as wisdom wells. This particular Diver is enjoying the natural beauty of the surface, but she longs to go for a dive. She feels there is so much there she has yet to explore, so much that will enrich her life.

Just in front of this field of flowers, there is a well, that wisdom well she longs to explore. And there is a fisherman there. He feels that he needs to protect this well, and this maiden diver, and provide sustenance for himself and for her. He has his fishing line in the water, hoping to snag a morsel or two for their dinner. She has ignored her instinct to dive for so long because she has been told that his provision is enough. Inside, she knows this not to be the entire truth.

She is not hungry. Not for food at the moment. Not for anything the fisherman can provide, as grateful as she is for him. Her heart is hungry for something else, and so she lets the fisherman know that she is going to go for a dive in the well. He begins to protest, wanting to protect her in the only way he knows how. She gently tells him that she is going to be fine. She will use his transparent fishing line as a guide. He can even take a nap (fishermen love their naps while waiting for the fish to bite), and she will pull on the line if she needs him.

He thinks, okay, what could it hurt, and replaces the hook with a weight and drops the line in to the well for her safety. She has anticipated this day for some time, and so she takes a deep breath in…and out…

And steps into the water. The temperature is perfect and so she wades in deeper until she can grab hold of the transparent fishing line and submerge her body into the water of the well. She finds that she can breathe just as easily underwater as she can above the surface, and she takes a deep breath in… and out….

She points her body down so that she can descend into the depths, feeling her way to the bottom along the line, breathing comfortably in… and out…. There is darkness and mystery but none of it is scary. She can see the light of the surface if she looks back to the top,

and interestingly she sees light coming from below, and she keeps swimming down.

Her eyes adjust as she goes, and she breathes easily, in…and out…

As she reaches the bottom, she finds a comfortable place to sit, in lotus position perhaps. She feels the sway of the current here; it is relaxing, almost like it’s cradling her. She breathes in… and out… And she waits and watches to see what wisdom and life she will find here.

Breathe in…and breathe out… and when you are ready, open your eyes to begin the imagery work.

The Ascent – Following Your Imagery Work

Now that your imagery work is complete, close your eyes once again and see yourself at the bottom of the well in lotus position. You have seen so much and your heart is full, and grateful. You breathe in… and out… knowing that you can return here whenever you wish to gain a fuller sense of both the surface and the underworld here in the water. This place here, welcomes your return, and soon.

You begin your ascent, slowly to the top, following the transparent fishing line. Careful not to tug, you let it flow through your fingers. No need to wake the fisherman just yet. Breathing in… and out… you enjoy the sensation of water on your skin, and you rise to the top with all of the wisdom from below.

Your head gently breaks the surface and you take a deep breath in… and out… You look over at the fisherman and see him slowly open his eyes. He winks at you, glad that you have returned.

You step out of the water, excited to share with him all that you discovered!

Slowly wiggle your fingers and toes, bringing your mind and body back into ordinary reality. Back into normal time and physical space.
